Property Dualism - 1389 Words

This essay assesses property dualism, a theory of mind. It proclaims the existence of a single, physical substance (unlike Cartesian dualism), but argues that this single substance has two potential properties: physical and mental states that are not reducible. The idea that mental states are non-reducible properties of brain states is the central tenant of a theory of mind called property dualism. However, before we can assess the theory we must be aware that the question assumes the existence of mental states and as such we cannot answer this question from some perspectives (e.g. eliminative materialism) Property dualism proclaims the existence of a single, physical substance (unlike Cartesian dualism), but argues that this single†¦show more content†¦A more damaging attack is to question whether property dualism does indeed solve the problem of location associated with substance dualism. Just because mental properties supervene physical properties does not explain where they are, just how they interact with physical properties. Furthermore if mental states are properties of physical matter in the same way that physical states are, then how is it so that we can scientifically measure physical properties, but not the mental sates that they give rise to? It seems highly problematic for property dualism to claim that there are facts that cannot be measured scientifically; and this issue also renders the theory unfalsifiable. To continue this thread, what is different between physical properties in my brain that supposedly give rise to mental states and the physical properties in my washing machine that apparently do not? In response to this issue, complexity has been invoked as this can give rise to emergent properties. However, if complexity is used as differentiating property between systems with and without mental states, can we not point to other systems with complexity rivalling that of the human mind and ask if they experience mental states? Maybe the internet experiences mental states, or weather systems? In addition we must be entitled to ask at what point a biological system becomes sufficiently complex to experience mental states. The main argument for dualism is that facts about the objective external world of particles and fields of force, as revealed by modern physical science, are not facts about how things appear from any particular point of view, whereas facts about subjective experience are precisely about how things are from the point of view of individual conscious subjects. White Employees And Employment Discrimination - 1863 Words

As it can be seen from the calculations above, a clear pattern of discrimination has occurred in both the warehouse and store promotion decisions in 2008. In both cases, as well as in the overall combined promotion rates, black employees were consistently hired at a lower than acceptable rate than their white counterparts. Therefore, any black employees who applied for a promotion during 2008 may have a case for employment discrimination depending on their unique circumstances. 2007 on the other hand is a bit trickier for any black employees wishing to file an employment discrimination claim, because only in the case of promotions occurring at stores were black employees promoted at less than 80% the rate of white employees. Employees who worked in a warehouse and were passed over for a promotion in 2007 may not be able to use the four-fifths rule as a basis for employment discrimination because black employees were actually promoted at a higher rate than white employees during that time. Ironically, it is white employees who worked in a warehouse during 2007 who may have a claim for employment discrimination because white employees were hired at a rate of 0.74 that of black employees. In fact, black employees were even promoted at a higher rate overall during 2007. Lost Generation vs Beat Generation - 2771 Words

A Comparison between Ernest Hemingway and Jack Kerouac in Context of their Corresponding Literary Periods Introduction While reading Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road I have noticed that the author Ernest Hemingway is mentioned quite often in the book. This has raised my interest to focus my research on the following. For the purpose of this paper I would like to take a closer look at Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road, in context of the Beat Generation, in comparison to Ernest Hemingway, the leader of the Lost Generation. This paper tries to show the differences and the agreements between the two literary streams and how it influenced the two particular authors. Therefore, the paper starts with a definition of the Lost Generation and†¦show more content†¦Autobiographies were considered to be essential during the literary period of the 1920’s and as Philippe Lejeune claims,†the author, the narrator, and the protagonist must be identical† (Monk, 10). By means of this particular genre, those writers found a way to communicate with the mass audience (Monk 14). The authors of the Lost Generation even defined themselves by their autobiography and their involvement with each other, because they shared the same motives and their time of experience abroad. Those autobiogra phies functioned as a question of identity for Lost Generation writers, because they interpreted their existence as meaningless, after the war. Jack Kerouac’s novel On the road also shares some autobiographical aspects, because the narrator tells its own personal story, which is actually referring to the author himself; basically, Sal is a real-life person. The book’s content is based on real-life events of Jack Kerouac. The narrator somehow functions as an alter ego. In the novel, the narrator, Sal Paradise, a young dissatisfied man, who broke with communities and suffers from the depression of World War II, reflects the feelings of Jack Kerouac and simultaneously the ones of a whole generation. Both, this novel and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises stand for the mood and the feelings of their particular generation. To e specific, below is the specific elaboration of internal and external factors analysis that Airbus Company experiences. 1.1.Internal Factors Analysis Summary The internal analysis illustrates factors/issues that impinge on The Airbus straightforwardly (â€Å"Assessing the Micro-Environment†, 2006), which can be elaborate through following factors: 1.1.1.Organizational structure Airbus is managed by an Executive Committee led by President and Chief Executive Officer Christian Streiff and appointed by the Shareholders Committee, which consists of five members from EADS and two from BAE Systems. Each member of the Executive Committee has responsibility to manage core functions and strategy in his field. There are four General Managers; each has geographical responsibilities representing four countries where Airbus exists; the countries are France, Germany, Spain and the UK, while the subsidiaries in China and Japan are each headed by a President and in North America by a Chairman.   Currently, Airbus Company employs a hierarchical, ridged, and semi autocratic management style. Airbus Company must change their organization culture and structure in order to maintain and build on its worldwide dominate position as a major producer of commercial jet aircraft. 1.1.2 Coordination Airbus Company regards skills, strengths, and perspectives of their diverse team as the most import things to sustain the company’s growth. The staff is the people who work and manage the company’s products and service to the customers.   That is why Airbus Company gives them the right combination of skills, training, communications, environment, and leadership. Beside Airbus Company provides a safe workplace and protects the environment, they also promote the health and well-being of the staffs and their families. 1.2. External Factors Analysis Summary The external factors describe issues that a company like Airbus has a little influence but affect the company severely. It includes universal tendencies and powers that possibly will not directly influence the links that Airbus has with their consumers, suppliers and mediators. Furthermore, Airbus separates the macro-environment into many sections, as the following: 1.2.1.   Economical factors One major external factor is an aircraft manufacturer like Airbus is prone to the political and economical situation. According to a research and observation, it is found that airline companies’ growth has a very close connection to economic growth and trade, which in turn prevent airlines from buying new airplanes from Airbus and other aircraft manufacturers. For example the gulf war in 1990s has damped the airline industry as the war resulted worldwide economic recession. In the era, IATA’s member airlines suffered $20.4 billion losses within 1990 to 1994 (â€Å"The Airline Industry†). The 9/11 tragedy has give the economy a significant down phase, especially the airline industry which has a direct involvement in the tragedy. Almost all airlines suffer losses during the following periods of the incident. Safety and security concerns have been major discussion topics on government bodies, business firms and common society in general.
